Resident Evil 5 to support PS3 motion control

TGS 2009: "Alternative Edition" of Capcom's horror survival game to arrive next spring with motion-control support; Xbox 360 variant also announced.

TOKYO--Capcom's latest survival horror shooter Resident Evil 5 has seen ample success this year, selling 5 million units as of the publisher's last accounting. At Capcom's press conference during the Tokyo Game Show today, Resident Evil 5 producer Masachika Kawata unveiled that a new version of the horror survival game is currently in development.

Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition is currently slated to arrive in Japan on the PlayStation 3 this spring, under the title Biohazard 5: Alternate Edition. Notably, the game will support Sony's new EyeToy-compatible motion controller, which reports indicate will launch in March.

Capcom hinted that an Xbox 360 edition of the game is also planned. "In regards to the Xbox 360, a lot of fans have enjoyed the game on the console. So we are working to release the additional content in another format, as a product." Project lead Miho Suzuki did not mention if the title was one of the Project Natal games that Capcom is currently developing.

The biggest change from the original Resident Evil 5 is that Alternative Edition will feature game controls that make use of Sony's recently announced motion controller. For series fans, another big change is the addition of a new episode featuring Chris and Jill. The episode will be based on the flashback scene from the original RE5, where the two characters infiltrate the Spencer estate in Europe.

"It was a key incident in Resident Evil 5, but it was only there as a flashback scene," Miho said. "In Alternative Edition, you'll actually be able to play through it. We had a lot of requests from fans about it."

Suzuki said that Alternative Edition is currently slated only for Japan. Capcom's North American representatives had not responded to requests for additional comment as of press time.

I would like to play the new bonus edition with the standard Resi 5 controls, not the EyeToy. It may end up playing a bit like Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, which I thought was pretty good, but still far too imprecise in comparison to the sturdy Gamecube pad.

I hope that the Main Game contains a LOT more enemies swarming around you just like they were in the previous trailers. Playing the actual game, it would only be like three against one, not a mob against you as the clips had indicated

I really hope they'll release a DLC with that particular content. I've just bought the PC version, finding out another version with extra content will be sold, is unacceptable.

Hopefully they will be fixing the AI and let you walk and shot at the same time! Think it would make for alot more fun, and bring back the speacial weapons from the GameCube Resident Evil Remake where you got the zombies with a knife for Jill and grenade for Chris repectably.

how the hell is re 5 going to use motion control?
just ether buy re4 or re5 WITHOUT motion control.
    it will be cheaper.
the thing i want in it is the flashback scene

If only Capcom hadn't become so greedy I would not regret buying their games, but they are so good I can't help it. If they unlock the vs mode and sell it for 50 bucks then I'm selling my old copy of RE5 and buying this one.

Even though I won't be buying this when it comes out, it is still a good sign to see top-notch producers like capcom will support the new motion controlled devices.

Why don't they just develop a Wii version already?

I know I'm not the only one who wants it to happen...

I wonder if motion controls is what it will take to get me interested in the horror survival games. I would never speak ill of them but the RE series, Left4Dead and Dead Space weren't my thing but thats just me. Im sure they have interesting story lines and cinematics so I guess Im I'll use this game to find out. Im also curious how interested I am in playing any full length game with motion controls, seems more like a multiplayer thing to me I can only imagine whether or not Id enjoy something like Batman: AA or Infamous with this, how they could pull it off would blow my mind to be quite frank.

I hope that extra level will be available as dlc for us that have go the game and don't need that motion support stuff to enjoy a game. Otherwise I totally agree with snarple_basic

I have to say that RE4 for wii was more enjoyable than the original, but not enough to justify buying it twice, it will be just the same with re5, they should just release it as a download add on, I doubt they will change the controls they will just be ported to the sonymote
